Episode 55: The Passive Voice

Welcome to Episode 55 of Learn Spanish 5 Minutes per Day in 100 Days! In this episode, we will explore the passive voice in Spanish. The passive voice is used to emphasize the action done to the subject instead of the subject performing the action. Let's dive in and learn how to form and use the passive voice!

Voz pasiva.

Passive Voice.

Repeat: Voz pasiva.

In Spanish, the passive voice is formed by using the verb ser (to be) followed by the past participle of the main verb. The subject of the sentence becomes the receiver of the action instead of the doer. Let's see the conjugation of ser in the present tense:

  • Yo soy (I am)
  • Tú eres (You are)
  • Él/Ella/Usted es (He/She/You are)
  • Nosotros/Nosotras somos (We are)
  • Vosotros/Vosotras sois (You all are)
  • Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes son (They/You all are)

Let's see some examples:

El libro fue escrito por mi autor favorito.

The book was written by my favorite author.

Repeat: El libro fue escrito por mi autor favorito.

La casa fue construida hace muchos años.

The house was built many years ago.

Repeat: La casa fue construida hace muchos años.

Los premios fueron entregados a los ganadores.

The awards were given to the winners.

Repeat: Los premios fueron entregados a los ganadores.

The passive voice allows us to focus on the action done to the subject instead of the subject itself. Practice using the passive voice to describe actions in a different perspective in Spanish.

In the next episode, we will explore the difference between formal and informal speech in Spanish.

Stay tuned and keep up the great work!

¡Hasta luego!

See you later!
